    Just finished reading your prayer letter and blog. I enjoyed the 100 things about you. Interesting. Happy Birthday! I’d be interested to know what you think of “The Shack”. Tim and I are currently listening to it on CD when we travel in the car. I got it for Christmas also. ~ Shelly B

    We both had a lot of fun with the 2 Grandchildren that visited over Christmas and New Years. We also had snow after New Years and one of the coldest winters on record here in Madrid.

    Which reminds me, I’m not really sure how global warming is working here in Spain Somehow, global warming seems to be making the weather ‘generally’ cooler here in Spain. At least that’s how it feels to me personally… Maybe I just don’t understand what’s happening but here are some ‘personal’ observations on this subject:

    Now that we have global warming in Spain:

    I have to wear my heavy coat instead of my jacket in the winter.
    Summers here in Spain seem noticeably cooler.
    There is more rain in Spain (falling both on the plain and elsewhere…)
    The car has a frosted windshield in the morning almost every day.
    Spaniards tell us it hasn’t been this cold for at least 30 years…

    Anyway, global warming must be happening somewhere else this year… at least so far…

    Great pictures. We sure miss everybody.
    Dad, last summer in Anchorage was the coldest on record. Alaska, in general, has been colder than usual this season. Maybe that’s explains the terminology switch to “climate change”…

    I gave both Ana and Elijah a bucket and a scoop to play with the snow while I worked to clear it off the patio. The worked along side me diligently filling their buckets and then dumping them one on top of the other to build our ‘snow man’. At one point while I was sweeping they began to fight and squabble. I turned to investigate and found they were both trying to load their buckets from the same small spot of powder. Each was rebuking the other claiming; “no, that’s MY snow”. The irony of their dispute was obvious. The snow belonged to neither specifically and, there was more of it on either side of them than they could possibly shovel if they worked for a week. As both focused on one tiny little patch of ground and, argued about who it belonged to, they failed to see that acres and acres of the white stuff was lying everywhere around them completely untouched! What a hilarious picture they were squabbling back and forth over one tiny heap of the almost infinite supply.

    The ridiculousness of their argument made me laugh to myself and I thought immediately of how closely their behavior mirrored what we adults often do. We think we’re above such childish silliness but in reality we often focus our own little “shovels and buckets” on some tiny narrow personal solution or desire while we forget that the spiritual plain that surrounds us is quite large and very wide and, our Heavenly Father has provided for us in overwhelming abundance. If we would just stop and turn our heads long enough to view the landscape from a spiritual perspective we might see His provisions lying around just like the acres and acres of the white powdery fluff that our two little grand-kids missed. There it is; massive quantities, direct from heaven, completely untouched everywhere, and, waiting for us to refocus our desires and scoop it up into our buckets.

    I think it was Lincoln who said; “You can warm some of the ‘global’ all of the time, and you can warm all of the ‘global’ some of the time, but, if you’re going to warm all of the ‘global’ all of the time, then, you better change the ‘global warming’ description to ‘climate change’ ”… or… you’re not going to be able to get all of the people to believe you all of the time and you may have to give back your ‘no-bell prize’ ”!

    Speaking of climate change, typically balmy (or: sticky) Raleigh is 14 degrees this morning. I actually had to pull out gloves!!!
