Canning Beef Stew
After Christmas Anita and I went to Makro (the Spanish version of SAM’s Club or COSTCO) so she could buy some of the foods that are available here in Spain but not in France. We noticed that there was a HUGE markdown of meats so I was able to get 10 lbs of beef and 4 lbs of pork for 30%-50% off of the regular price. Yesterday I canned 20 jars of beef stew and 4 of pork w/ chipotle spice (thanks again Vanita for the spices). If you are interested in the recipe that I used, just click on the ‘beef stew’ link in the text.
Canning is a wonderful way to save time and money. It’s also a way to learn new skills, and not forget the ways of past generations.
I’m looking at my empty jars and it looks like I have enough for canning some pancake syrup and some applesauce. If I find a good deal on fruits or vegetables this month I’ll put them up. Please leave your comments and send any of your suggestions for canning.

We used to make a stew mix with moose and can it in pint jars. I would take those to work and set them on my coffee warmer where they would stay until lunch. By then it would be ready to eat.

Isn’t canning the most convenient?! We never have to worry about defrosting after a trip or buying fast food, because I always have jars of homemade food ready to eat. I bet the moose makes really good taco meat too! I like to can meat raw… so tender!

I know what you mean Anita… I am having several dinner parties and most of my work is already done! Loving it! One day I want to see your pantry as extensive as mine.
